Project ECHO Series on Mothers and Substance Use Disorder

Project ECHO Flier - May 2024
Good morning beautiful people,

I am counting down to the Man U - Arsenal game that starts in the next hour, so this will be really quick - like the corporates, I am shamelessly jumping on the Mother’s Day wagon with this post.

As you all know I spent my last semester learning the basics of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) through my psychopathy classes, a ‘how to use Narcan in case of overdose’ training, a documentary on 'generational addiction, the Addiction Treatment and Recovery track of a virtual conference, and my first academic poster .

All these learning opportunities added a twist to everything I thought I knew about decision-making, substance use and the 'concept' of motherhood. So as Mother's Day approached, I toyed with the idea of putting together an op-Ed to highlight the 'types of mothers' I had 'encountered'

those who went in for a routine surgery, got some pain meds as part of their recovery plan, and months later ended up depending on substances to be able to perform 'simple everyday' tasks.

those who have lost pregnancies due to said dependency,
those who have had their other children taken away from them,
those who have children who use substances because of their use,

...and those on the other end of the spectrum, those who have never used but have children who are dependent.

Given how multi-dimensional this space is, I could not pin down an angle for the op-Ed, so I shelved idea (for now). I, however, signed up for an interesting learning opportunity that I came across when I was looking for angles; a 8-part virtual learning session by Penn State's Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes).
ECHO offers free, virtual tele-mentoring sessions that allow those working in the community to engage with 'specialists' in various areas. They have had sessions on different health topics, and I am really glad that I learnt about them, just before they started a session on maternal SUD (which was the focus area for my independent study and poster presentation).

The first session is scheduled for this coming Tuesday, May 14th from 12-1pm EST, with subsequent sessions every other Tuesday until August 20th.

I look forward to gaining additional knowledge in the field of maternal SUD, getting enough angles to focus my op-Eds on, and maybe my grad school thesis.

Until my summary post about the sessions, enjoy your day and to my Gunners, let’s go get these Red Devils.

Sending love and light,
Sitawa

Update:
We WON at Old Trafford (in the rain)!!!

We are on top of the chart.
Present Day Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger 😊 at the end of today’s game Man U 0 : Arsenal 1 - May 2024
I would really like us to break our dry spell and bring home this cup. Back in the day, Man U stood between us and that dream. Now we have Man City messing our swag, they did it last season and are trying it again this season…but if Tottenham beat them on Tuesday, then we beat Everton on Sunday we might change Premier League history with both our title champions comeback, and breaking their three consecutive wins.
