Things That Kept Me Up Tonight: Too Many Body Deo Ads & Bollywood Nostalgia
March 28, 2025First Bollywood movie in over 20 years - March 2025 |
Is it just me, or are there way too many body deodorant ads out here? (I lost the remote in the couch, so I had no choice but to watch them all.) Underarms, I get—but full-body deo? Someone school me. Is this a climate change thing? A BBL thing? Or do I just stay indoors too much to know that bodies are sweating like this out here?
Anyway, back to tonight.
My siblings and I have a group chat where we hype each other up, share baby pictures, and, of course, drop random reels, social media silliness, and interesting things we’re watching. Recently, an Indian movie made its way into the chat, and I realized I hadn’t watched one since they were a staple on KBC, Kenya’s national broadcaster.
Growing up in Kenya—before Nollywood movies and Mexican soaps took over—Indian films were the action. Sure, we watched James Bond, Rambo, and all the Jackie Chan/Jet Li flicks, but they had nothing on those Bollywood dance-to-war sequences.
For over two hours, I took a refreshing break from my usual watchlist (I am knee-deep in those Hulu based on a true story documentaries, thanks to them baiting me with a $3-a-month subscription—y’all know I only reactivate my account during my birthday month because they give me a free “happy birthday” gift). As I watched the Bollywood movie, I got lost in the stunning costumes, jewelry, and of course the storyline and the war scenes that looked straight out of an Old Testament epic—but with the Shaka Zulu vision.
Speaking of which, Shaka Zulu used to air on KTN (I think Kenya’s first private TV station)… that was some scary but fascinating stuff.
I think I’m hooked again. More Bollywood movies are definitely in my future—starting with part two of this movie, aka another 2+ hour commitment. At this rate, I might as well sign up for my first Holi event.
Hope y’all had a lovely day and an even lovelier evening.
